"God? Come here for a minute. SLAP! SLAP! SLAP!"

Same-sex marriages begin in Vermont

DUXBURY, Vt. – After 17 years together, Bill Slimback and Bob Sullivan couldn't wait another minute to get married. So they didn't.

With Vermont's new law allowing same-sex marriage only a minute old, they tied the knot in a midnight ceremony at a rustic lodge, becoming one of the first couples to legally wed under a law that took effect at midnight Monday.

Dressed in suits, saying their vows under a large wall-mounted moose head, the two Whitehall, N.Y., men promised their love, exchanged rings and held hands during a modest 17-minute ceremony. Moose Meadow Lodge co-owner Greg Trulson, who's also a Justice of the Peace, presided.

"It feels wonderful," said Slimback, 38, an out-of-work Teamster who is taking Sullivan's last name as his own. "It's a day I've been long waiting for, and a day I truly honestly thought would never come."

Slimback said he and Sullivan, 41, have long wanted to cement their relationship with a wedding, but since they couldn't legally marry in New York they chose to wed even before Vermont's gay marriage era officially dawned.

Vermont is one of five states that now allow same-sex couples to marry. Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa are the others. New Hampshire's law takes effect Jan. 1, 2010.

Vermont, which invented civil unions in 2000 after a same-sex couple challenged the inequality of state marriage statutes, was a mecca for gay couples who to that point had no way to officially recognize their relationships.

Since then, other states have allowed gay marriage, as did Vermont, which in April became the first state to legalize gay marriage through a legislative decree and not a court case.

Some couples — including many who obtained civil unions in Vermont — plan to return to the state to get married. But most are in no rush. City and town officials say only a handful of licenses had been issued to same-sex couples in anticipation of Tuesday's start.

"We've waited a long time to do this — basically, our whole lives," Slimback said Monday. "We've been waiting for a chance to actually solidify it," he said. He and Sullivan said they never wanted to obtain a civil union because they believe that's a kind of second-class recognition.

(This version CORRECTS SUBS 6th graf to correct that NH's law takes effect Jan. 1.)

Well, thankfully it doesn't look like that 'minister' is using the Bible (a.k.a. Yah's Holy Word) for this.

I am not a 'homophobe'. I am not 'anti-gay'. I have homosexual friends believe it or not. I love them dearly. They know Whom I serve and what Book I use to back up why I believe this is wrong.

One doesn't even have to use the Bible to see the error in this. Nature itself does that. Man and man cannot procreate. Woman and woman cannot procreate. They cannot have sex with one another, it doesn't work that way. Our body parts were created for the opposite sex for a reason.

I am not typing out of feeeeelings or emotionalism, I am speaking as a Christian who takes the Bible very literally.

We all are going to have to give an account for our lives, everyone. No one is excluded. The Bible is what we have to live, to prosper, to flourish righteously and we are going to be judged by how we lived it.

Our world, unfortunately is ASLEEP! (Proverbs 6:10 , Proverbs 24:33)

Guys, gals, we are ONE, read me, ONE step away from Eternity. It's time to get serious about it.

I leave you with a quote from God:

"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,

And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,

Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:

Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them."

---- Romans 1:18:32

I am glad you posted about this. Everything about this screams wrong! The world is so full of sin. Come soon Jesus!

I am not "anti-gay" either, but I have known for a long time that same sex marriages are wrong in the eyes of God. You are also correct that ALL OF US will be accountable before God in that great and terrible day of judgement when Christ returns to the earth. I don't think some people realize the seriousness of this.

I also agree with Inninsfree in Alaska's comment: "Come soon Jesus!"

Fornication is a sin. Fornication is sex outside of marriage ~ and marriage is defined as between a man and a woman.

Tell people that if they try and say you hate gay people! It has nothing to do with hate and everything to do with procreation as you said ~ and how God has designed us to be opposite sexes that come together!

I was reading an article that pointed out that if gay marriage was such a necessity, why are so few gay people getting married? Interesting point...

It's so scary to think that if we DONT speak out against sin then we can be held accountable as "accessories to the crime" and not loving our neighbors as we love ourselves!!

If homosexual sex and having multiple hetrosexual partners outside of a faithful monogamous marriage is ok why are there so many health consequences resulting from the above?

Doctors and government health sites never mention that the only 100% prevention from sexually transmitted diseases and some anal and throat cancers is abstinence before marriage and faithfulness in marriage.
